Bosses, I’m calling you out. No, not the Leaders, just the bosses. You are putting good team members and their families in jeopardy of losing their livelihood. How? By running an unaccountable, unengaged team, that’s how!
Oh yeah, you’ve got the posters on the wall and even handed out tee-shirts that say, “Our Employees Are Our Greatest Asset”. They should be in the trash. Why? I am aware of seven team members in different departments in your organization that logged into www.TheEngagedTeam.com and answered this question;
“Not counting an annual appraisal, how long has it been since your manager sat down with you one-on-one and discussed: expectations, visions of the company, company culture, your progress, improvement needed, your ideas for the business or praise?”
Here were the seven answers they recorded:
1. Can’t remember.
2. Over three years ago when I had a different manager.
3. Can’t remember but she hasn’t even talked to me in six weeks and she is just down the hall.
5. Over two years ago.
6. Never, but I would never think of treating my team that way. You must keep them informed.
7. I’m not sure but my hair was darker.
I know seven is not a valid statistical study with 2000 employees but the answers made me ill. I quit checking. One answer like this is unacceptable to Leaders. Guess it must be okay with bosses. If your employees are your greatest asset, how are you communicating with them? How are you engaging them in the business? Let me answer that. You are NOT!
And another thing. Your results on quality, productivity, safety, revenue generation and attendance are in the dumpster. If you could improve each one by 10% they would get up to pitiful.
Through a friend of a friend I was able to ask this question; How many employees are currently on a documented Performance Improvement Plan or some level of discipline because of poor performance. Do you know how many? ZERO-NONE-NADA! How are you holding anyone accountable? Osmosis? No, you are not holding them accountable and no one is holding you accountable.
You ran 30% overtime last year and filled every vacancy that came open even though your absence, productivity and quality were well below established objectives. You did this to “protect your head count”. Every position you filled with results and profits as they were put someone in jeopardy and you did nothing to correct the problem. I am selling every share I own in your company and will insure that none of my mutual funds have even one share of your company.
