In our Leadership coaching, it’s about more than just the job. We cover many topics. One of them is “The Bucket Story” that was shared with me by a mentor when I needed it the most. When the student was ready, the teacher appeared…in the form of a story.
As I put another candle on my cake today and reflect, I would like to share a poem I wrote as a result of hearing “The Bucket Story”. I hope you enjoy.

The Best Day Of My Life© By: Greg Gilbert
He sat there in the attic, surrounded by their past,
Where 50 years of we, was stacked, scattered and stashed.
It had only been a year since the death of his wife,
But family and friends had all filled his life.
She never lost faith or her smile as he brushed back a few tears,
What doctors said was months, turned into many years.
The memories raced though his mind under a 60-watt light,
It’s so hard to close a book it took 50 years to write.
As he looked through boxes of photos he laughed, then he cried,
It was a life of love together and that couldn’t be denied.
There were albums of many vacations, photos of her and the kids,
Most times he stayed home and worked, the picture missing was his.
He had deadlines to meet, ladders to climb, vacation was just time lost,
But as he reflects in that attic, it all came at a cost.
Then it caught his eye, one box alone, up there on a shelf,
Two diaries and a journal packed all by their self.
He brushed off the dust, thumbed through the books, turned pages one by one,
Viewing oh so many thoughts of a wife, daughter and son.
The books were full of memories but so different in his mind.
So he grabbed the three books to see what he could find.
He found his old journal buried so deep in a file,
Flipped open to compare the writings of a father, a wife and a child.
He flipped open his journal, just picked a day one Spring,
“Wasted the entire day fishing with my family, and didn’t catch a thing.”
He scrambled to find that date in the diaries of his son, daughter and wife,
They all said the same thing, went fishing with my family, had the best day of my life!
